In November 2024 GHCH was approved for funding and entered into a partnership with Parachute Canada. Parachute is Canada’s national charity dedicated to injury prevention.
GHCH is a youth mountain biking organization primarily active on the trail systems in Hamilton and its surrounding areas, particularly in Dundas Valley. These trails often require riders to cross roads where there is auto traffic, creating potential hazards. For instance, routes like the Rail Trail between Hamilton and Brantford and the Headwaters Trail from Martin’s Side Road to the Trail Center necessitate these crossings. Such situations can be dangerous for both cyclists and drivers; riders may speed onto the road without checking for oncoming traffic, while drivers might be caught off guard by a cyclist suddenly appearing as the trail resumes. Unfortunately, many crossings are unmarked and lack clear signals for riders to stop and yield to traffic. GHCH Youth Ambassador’s aim to raise awareness and promote safe crossing practices at these intersections, whether riding solo or in groups. This safety initiative is part of GHCH’s curriculum and will be beneficial for both trail users and drivers in the Dundas Valley and surrounding areas.
